Mussel Fry Masala (Kallumakkai fry)


Ingredients:
(To marinate)
2lbs Mussels (cleaned)
1/2 tsp Red Chilli powder
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
1/4 tsp Vinegar
2 pinches Salt
Water

(For Masala)
6-7 Pearl Onions (cut lenghtwise)
1 Garlic clove (minced)
2 Green chillies (split lenghtwise)
1 1/2 tbsp Coriander powder
1/4 tsp Pepper powder
1/2 tsp Garam Masala
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
2 sprigs Curry Leaves
Oil

Direction:
  • Mix chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt, and vinegar with very little water to make a thick paste
  • Mariante cleaned, de-shelled mussels with the mixture for 30 minutes in the refrigerator
  • Shallow fry the mussels until they are cooked. Don't over cook them
  • Place them on a paper towel to soak up excess oil
  • In the same pan add some more oil if necessary
  • Add pearl onions and garlic and sautee for 2-3 minutes
  • Add curry leaves and green chillies
  • Add all the powders and mix it will with the onion and let it fry for another 2-3 minutes
  • Now add the fried mussels, mixt it well with the masala and let it cook together for no more than 5 minutes. Make sure you don't cover the pan
  • Add more salt if necessary
  • Serve with some hot white rice

  2. Irene,kakka irachi are not mussles..it's actually kallumakkai ...we get them in plenty here. It's the local stuff , plucked straight out of the rocks in the sea :)
